Through my art practice I have become increasingly interested in the making of non-objective sculptural form, exploring the potential of abstract shape to create work that combines the notions of compositional simplicity and visual complexity.
Working predominantly with timber I am bringing together the processes of construction and assembly with the expressive quality of material to create non-representational work, work however that looks to architectural and industrial structure for inspiration.
Following this minimalist aesthetic I am specifically interested in shape, material and finish as I aspire to succeed in the creation of really good form, rather than trying to tell a story.
A further motivation toward this sculptural ideal is to allow the viewer to observe and interpret for themselves, work which stands without obvious association and connection.
I am an academic staff member with the CPIT School of Art and Design and the School of Architectural Studies, Christchurch where I teach 3D/sculpture and furniture design.
